Just outside the capital city of Nairobi in Kiambu County, some 1,000 smallholder growers form the Gatatha Farmers Company. They cultivate prized Kenyan varieties like SL-28 and SL-34 and deliver their daily harvest of ripe cherry to Windrush Estate for classification and washed processing. Historically known for dairy, tea, and coffee production, the region has experienced steady pressure from Nairobi’s urban expansion, with agricultural land increasingly giving way to real estate development. In this shifting landscape, smallholders like those in the Gatatha collective continue to produce specialty coffee that reflects Kiambu’s high elevation and mineral-rich soils. This lot showcases their efforts, further refined through sorting at the dry mill to AA standards, one of Kenya’s most uniform and premium quality grades.

How To Brew

We recommend starting with a 1:18 coffee-to-water ratio, which provides an excellent total extraction level and maximizes flavor pulled out of the ground coffee. For our single origin coffees we recommend a pour over method either on a Chemex, V60 or Kalita Wave on a 5 or 6 grind setting if you are ordering from Intelligentsiacoffee.com.
