Origin story

  • Country Kenya
  • Processing Method Washed
  • Drying Method Raised Bed
Perched at 1,700 meters above sea level, Nyamatu Estate is a 6-hectare farm in Kiambu County run with care and dedication by Nyamatu Kiburi. While modest in size for a Kenyan estate, its exceptional practices and quality set it apart. Nyamatu personally oversees every step of production—from cherry selection to parchment processing—ensuring the utmost attention to detail. With expert agronomist guidance, the farm applies precise fertilization, pruning, and renovation techniques, optimizing each harvest. This lot features a blend of Blue Mountain, SL28, and SL34 varieties, prized for their vibrant, complex flavors. During harvest, cherries are handpicked 1-2 times a week at peak ripeness. After picking, the coffee undergoes a 12-16 hour fermentation process, followed by thorough washing to remove residual mucilage. In a commitment to sustainability, all wastewater is treated to protect the surrounding environment. Post-fermentation, the beans are soaked for 24 hours before being spread on raised beds to sun-dry for 10-20 days, ensuring even drying and consistent quality.

How To Brew

We recommend starting with a 1:18 coffee-to-water ratio, which provides an excellent total extraction level and maximizes flavor pulled out of the ground coffee. For our single origin coffees we recommend a pour over method either on a Chemex, V60 or Kalita Wave on a 5 or 6 grind setting if you are ordering from Intelligentsiacoffee.com.
