The Variety

La Palestina

This farm is not a single plot of land, but rather a collection of individual parcels that operate under the La Palestina name. The farm was started nearly 50 years ago and is now home to the third generation of the Alarcón Coronel family. La Palestina is located in the mountainous Cajamarca region of Northern Peru, in a remote area of Jaén known as San José del Alto. The average elevation of the farm is 1,769 m.a.s.l., but it spans from 1,200 to 2,000 m.a.s.l.

All parcels are operated by different members of the Alarcón Coronel family. The processing of the coffee takes place at a centralized wet mill where family members José and Anibal oversee fermentation and drying operations.

Ripe for Quality

The Alarcón Coronel family considers La Palestina to be unique due to a phenomenon they have observed over the years: anything they plant on the land seems to grow with ease. While coffee trees typically take 3 or more years to reach desired productivity and quality levels, those planted on this farm have shown significant production after just one year. In recent years, the family has collaborated with Origin Coffee Lab to renovate and replant their farm in phases, following recommended best agricultural practices designed to maximize productivity and quality. These efforts have been fruitful. Origin Coffee Lab shared the sentiment that “the yields and profitability of this farm are simply astounding,” which is not a common reality for many coffee farmers, but demonstrates the possibilities that can exist for a well-managed farm.

Farm Selection

We have launched some great Peru lots so far on our menu this year -- like the La Palestina Geisha and the El Rejo Bourbon -- that have given us a chance to experience variety-specific lot separation. In contrast, this lot from La Palestina is made up of cherries that were harvested from the mix of varieties that are planted across the farm: Pache, Bourbon, Caturra, Catuai, and catimor. Each variety occupies its own distinct parcel of land on La Palestina, forming a picturesque, quit-like patchwork across the landscape.
