The Variety
Coffee at its Peak
The Iturralde family claims that Finca Takesi is the highest coffee farm in the world, and we aren't inclined to argue with them.
The farm is perched precariously in a narrow fold of the Bolivian Andes, clinging to a steep hillside above a deep ravine carved over centuries by the rushing waters of the Takesi River below. Rising from the riverbed, the farm reaches more than 3100 meters, with coffee planted over 35 hectares between 1800 and 2500 meters. The upper limits of the farm are so high that conventional wisdom tells us coffee cannot grow there. The majestic, snow-capped peak of Mururata Mountain looms above the farm, serving as a reminder of the epic landscape and the challenges of growing and exporting coffee in such an extreme environment.
